PLYMOUTH - Technically, it’s a funicular, just because it’s fun to say. But the new tram at White Cliffs Country Club that ushers people quietly and calmly down a steep cliff to the beach below is also fun to ride, and is being heralded as a great boon to White Cliffs. If the response from residents is any indication, the club can expect an uptick in memberships. That’s because you don’t have to be a White Cliffs resident to enjoy the beach, gym, dining area and facilities; all you have to become a member.White Cliffs Country Club Membership Director Deborah Sylva beamed as she led a tour to the funicular, demonstrating just how quickly and quietly the tram transports up to five passengers to the beach below. “It’s 167 steps going down to the beach and 167 coming up,” Sylva said. “Not many people were using the beach. A 70-year-old-man with a heart condition who is a member here was brought to tears the other day. He said, ‘I’ve been looking at this beach for 10 years and I have never been able to go to the beach.’ “White Cliffs Country Club has a large population of older people and a number of handicapped residents as well - people who would love to enjoy the beach but it’s just too hard for them to reach. Thirty years ago, the club tried installing a similar transport that simply didn’t work. It’s been a long time coming, but the White Cliffs Board of Governors succeeded in making the funicular a reality with the Minnesota company Marine Innovations, the creator of this particular unit, and Above and Beyond, the Massachusetts company that installed it. The tram can hold up to five people or 1,200 pounds. The ride takes a matter of minutes and is absolutely quiet. You can barely even hear the hum of the motor. A tram operator is always on hand to make sure every rider is safe, and you can take drinks and food with you to the beach. You can also order lunch from the beach and have it brought to you.“You can call us while you’re on the beach and have food delivered,” Sylva said. The tram runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week through Columbus Day, Oct. 13. Sylva stressed that you don’t have to be a White Cliffs resident to enjoy the amenities like the health club, beach, tennis and dining. - Wicked Local Plymouth, MA
